Schiffman's is proud to have been a part of Greensboro's history for over 115-years!
In 1893, Simon Schiffman stopped in Greensboro to change trains on his way to Asheville. While waiting, he took a stroll along South Elm Street, found a jewelry business for sale and bought it on the spot.
As Greensboro grew northward, Simon's sons Arnold and Harold decided to move in the same direction, relocating their store to the 200 block of South Elm Street. A move considered quite bold at the time (the early 1920's), as they were warned "no respectable lady would walk on the same side of the street where the saloons were located." Today, the store they opened at 225 South Elm continues to serve as our company headquarters.
In the 1960's, Tony Schiffman joined the family firm, and Greensboro continued to grow and prosper. As many of our customers moved from the city to neighborhoods in the newly developed western suburbs, Schiffman's moved west with them - opening our store at Friendly Center, and branching out to Winston-Salem.
Today, with the fourth generation of the Schiffman family at the helm, Schiffman's Jewelers is the oldest family-run business in Greensboro. Simon Schiffman's principles and high ethical standards continue to inspire the current generation.
